Belgrade is a city with many names. One of the oldest is Singidunum, based on the Celtic name of the third century b.c. when the place was named "Fortress" (dunum) of the Singi.

The Romans created a province "Moesia Superior", corresponding roughly to Serbia today. In the first century a.c. the moved the 4th legion "Flavia Felix" into todays Belgrade. The legion with its 5000 men had their quarters at Kalemegdan, the forum was at today's crossing of Kralja Petra and Kneza Mihailova. Till today this is the center of the city. The cemetery was at today's Terasije. On Banovo Brdo were the wine yards located.

With the soldiers came support units, 500 mules, blacksmiths, washers, shoemakers, bakers, merchants ... 20 - 30thousand people lived in the city who had a size comparable to Pompeii. After the end of the roman empire, it took centuries till 1870 to reach this size.
